Problem with Pittsburgh Pens Boom

I recently installed FF 3.5.2. Since then, my Pitts. Pens Boom intermittently acts up. I have the default theme in use under the Big Boom. Where the entire top of the browser used to display the boom, it now only displays the toolbar version and then the theme in use above it, no matter what I do. So, the refresh, home page, history buttons are all in FF default theme, instead of the Pens theme. I tried switching to other Booms and they all had the same issue.

  • Sure. I opened the BT button on the right to show that I"m using the full Boom. It says "switch to small boom." Above the toolbar, the background is all in FF default theme now. Also, I have the Nature and Halloween Booms installed and can't switch to them in the Pick a Boom! section of the BT button. The only Boom I can choose there is whichever one is currently enabled from the FF addon menu. If i enable another, it automatically disables the first one.

Essentially, it seems like I only have Boom toolbar functionality no matter what I do.

    Thanks for the fast reply.

  • I'm guessing it's a coexistence problem with another extension. Can you provide me with a list of your installed extensions? I'll do some testing and see what I can figure out.

There's an extension that does this - https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/fire...

Also, one more thing. Go to about:config in the URL bar. In the Filter entry field. type "showInConsole" Double click on the preferences "javascript.options.showInConsole" so it is set to true.

What this does is cause any error an extension produces to show up in the Error Console.. Next, select Tools->Error Console and see if there are any error there that reference penguins.

    Thanks!

Okay, here's a screenshot of the list dump. If there's a better way to send you the list, let me know. It was hard to read when I saved it to a file.

Just FYI, all of these extensions have been in use for a while, well before I ever loaded the Pens Boom, and I've had no problems until the last two days. Not sure what I did to cause this.

I'll do the Error Console in another reply.

Thanks again for the great support.

  • I got this error in the console:

Error: uncaught exception: [Exception... "Component returned failure code: 0x80570016 (NS_ERROR_XPC_GS_RETURNED_FAILURE) [nsIJSCID.getService]" nsresult: "0x80570016 (NS_ERROR_XPC_GS_RETURNED_FAILURE)" location: "JS frame :: chrome://ietab/content/ietabUtils.js :: getShortcutOrURI :: line 40" data: no]

and a ton of warnings, probably a couple hundred, that said something like

Warning: Unknown property 'border-bottom-left-radius'. Declaration dropped.

I've been playing around with themes and extensions to determine better what is happening. One thing I've noticed is the title bar or whatever you'd call the very top of the firefox browser, which has the globe/fox icon and then displays the name of page you're on, never changes, no matter which extension or theme I use. It's always in the default Firefox theme, even though some themes have their own display. This happens whether or not the theme has been updated for FF 3.5.2.

Also, the search bar functionality at the top right of the browser is wonky. Sometimes the search engine icons display, sometimes not. At times, the drop down list of the engines is present, other times not.

I'm beginning to think this is a problem in the Chrome aspect of FF, which I'm just starting to learn about in their help section. If you can help in any way, I'd appreciate it. I realize this might be getting out of your domain, though.

I'd like to avoid a reinstall of FF if possible.

    Thanks.

  • I’m happy
Just an update, I decided to download and reinstall FF 3.5.2 over top of current install. That fixed mostly everything, the Pens Boom switches easily between large and small versions, the Nature Boom has all choices available and changes instantly, and the top right search engine bar is working correctly.

The only small problem is I can't seem to get out of the default FF theme for the topmost bar, no matter which theme I use. But I'll try to correct that through Mozilla.

    Thanks.

  • Thanks for trying something. I've been looking into this and I can't reproduce it.

Can you be more specific on the second part:

I replied so you wouldn't spend too much time on this. The remaining problem isn't even a minor annoyance, just kind of a hitch. Everything in the browser and booms is working correctly.

In the screenshot, see the very top of the browser frame; the part that says "Problem with Pittsburgh Pens Boom?"

That is always in default FF style, no matter which theme I have applied. Some themes change it to match colors and alter the minimize, restore, and close buttons to match the style. Mine is always in default FF theme, even if all Booms are uninstalled and I'm in a completely different theme.

I do get error messages saying "No chrome package registered for XXX" such as this one:

No chrome package registered for chrome://genclientboom/skin/gentwo/browser-win-trans.css

I was gonna try to get some help through Mozilla for this, so I hope you don't spend a lot of time on it. Any ideas you might have, I'll give a shot, though.

    Thanks for your help.

  • That's weird. That genclientboom thing is definitely us. One of your booms has something wrong with it.

Do you have any other booms besides canvas and penguins installed?

Which version of canvas and penguins?

    Thanks

  • I’m confounded
Well, I'm back to square one. For some reason, the top of the boom is gone again and I can only get the small toolbar version to work. I have Nature 1.1 and Pittsburgh Penguins 1.1. I never installed Canvas unless that's part of Nature.

What's happening is the background scenes aren't loading at all. Nothing happens. If I'm in Nature and I use the drop down box for scenes, the background is just always grey. Same for the Pens theme, it only loads the toolbar, no matter if I'm in big or small boom.

But the problem is there whether I have the Booms enabled, disabled, or completely uninstalled, so I'm not so sure the error is with you. If all booms are uninstalled, I still have the default FF theme problem, where I can't change the frame of the browser no matter what theme I use.

This is the error that is coming up right now:

    Error: uncaught exception: [Exception... "Component returned failure code: 0x80570016 (NS_ERROR_XPC_GS_RETURNED_FAILURE) [nsIJSCID.getService]" nsresult: "0x80570016 (NS_ERROR_XPC_GS_RETURNED_FAILURE)" location: "JS frame :: chrome://browser/content/search/search.xml :: get_searchService :: line 145" data: no]

I think tomorrow I'm gonna just try a complete uninstall and reload of FF, but I'm willing to try any last minute ideas you have. Thanks again for the attention, hope it didn't take up too much time.

  • Don't do a complete reinstall yet. I'll be giving you a new version of Nature. I think that's the problem. (at least with our stuff).

  • J.R, would you be willing to actually give me a copy of your profile directory so I can debug this? I would delete it when I am done.

If so, I'll give you instructions on how to zip it, and where to send it. If so, please contact me directly, mikek@brandthunder.com

I REALLY want to get this figured out...

  • Strange. I installed your profile, Penguins was disabled so I enabled it and I don't see the problem.

I tried closing and opening the browser 10 or 15 times, switching between booms, etc. and I don't see it.

Was there anything specific you were doing when it started?

I can't recall anything specific that might have tripped it. I have things like CCleaner, Glarys Utilities, but have changed no settings in them recently.

The only thing different was FF 3.5.2, which I installed maybe two weeks ago. Since I have the problem whether a boom is installed or not, it must be that.

    Thanks anyway.

  • Just as an update, I pinpointed the problem. Ever since I installed FF 3.5.2, one of the functions in Glarys Utilities is erasing my search bar (top right) and the top of the Boom. Not sure if it's the same issue for the rest of FF, there is still a chrome package error reporting, but this is definitely affecting the search bar in Boom.

It's the Tracks Eraser utility in Glarys, which can be found in the Privacy and Security section of the module tab. If I check the "Search History" box and run the utility, it erases the top of the boom every time. Unchecked, the browser is fine.

The Glarys version is 2.10.0.622. Hope this helps in some way.

EDIT: If I do run the utility with "Search History" checked, my browser looks like the first screenshot in this thread when I re-open.

but now that I checked, I haven't updated for a while. I'll do that to the current version and let you know if the problem still exists.
